Palitana Is known as 'city of temple' because there are more than 1250 temples located on the shetrunjaya hills. The Palitana temples are considered the most sacred pilgrimage place (tirtha) by the Jain community. The main temple on top of the hill is dedicated to 1st tirthankar lord Adinath (Rishabdeva).
It is believed that every Jain should visit Palitana at least once in his lifetime. The mountain is associated with Rishabhdev, the first tirthankar, also known as Adinath. There are 24 tirthankar in jain religion .It is believed that 23 tirthankars comes here.
The town is considered by many Jains to be more important than the temple covered hills of Jharkhand, Mt Abu and Girnar.
Among the most important temple here is the Chaumukh temple.The Adiswara temple is probably the most profusely decorated in Palitana, its ornate pillars and roofs decorated with intricately cut marble in the shape of dragons. Other temples worth architectural mention are the Sampriti Raja and Kumarpal.
Palitana was the capital of a princely state of the Gohil Rajput clan. It is also one of the greatest tourist attractions in Gujarat for foreign tourists. Every year millions of people come to visit these temples.
There are many other places around Palitana like Shatrunjaya River, ghetipagla, siddhavad , Hastgiri , Kadamgiri ,Talaja , adhidrip , kirthidham which is also nice place, each place has different importance and history.People whose come at Palitana must visit once to above place.
